『BEASTARS』가 제시하는 공존 (불)가능성
『BEASTARS』(2016~2020)는 육식 동물과 초식 동물이 함께 살아가는 평화로운 세계를 무대로 펼쳐지는 동물판 청춘 휴먼드라마를 그린 소년만화다. 주인공 레고시는 수컷 회 색늑대로, 육식 동물이 초식 동물을 잡아먹는 식살(食殺) 사건이 벌어지자 그 범인을 쫓 으며 표면상의 평화 이면에 숨겨진 사회의 어둠을 접하고 고뇌한다. 『BEASTARS』는 육 식 동물과 초식 동물의 본질적인 차이에서 기인하는 대립을 통해 인간 사회에도 가로놓 인 공존의 문제를 환기하여 그 청신한 표현력과 주제의식이 호평을 받았으나, 이러한 시 의적절한 주제에도 불구하고 아직 학술적 연구의 대상이 되지 못했다. 본질주의에 기초한 『BEASTARS』의 세계관은 언뜻 집단 간의 공존 불가능성을 노출하 는 듯하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 공존의 가능성을 모색한다는 점에서 융화와 화합이 지구 적인 화두로 떠오른 이 시대에 시사하는 바가 크다. 본고는 『BEASTARS』의 본질주의적 세계관이 현대 사회의 다문화주의를 표상한다는 관점을 토대로 『BEASTARS』가 일본의 독자적인 다문화주의 정책인 다문화공생과 어떠한 연관성을 갖는지 고찰하고자 한다. 이 어서 비슷한 주제의 디즈니 애니메이션 영화 『주토피아(Zootopia)』(2016)와 비교하면서, 『BEASTARS』가 공존을 위해 제시한 대답이 다문화공생의 한계를 넘어서기 위한 시각과 맞닿아있다는 점을 논의한다. 나아가 이 작품이 추구하는 공존 뒤에 남겨진 과제를 검토 함으로써 상생의 진일보를 위해 『BEASTARS』가 제시한 해답을 보완하는 것을 최종적인 목표로 한다.

The (Im)Possibility of Coexistence in BEASTARS
BEASTARS (2016-2020) is a comic for boys depicting an animal version of human drama for young boys set in a peaceful world where carnivores and herbivores live together. Legoshi, the main character of BEASTARS, is a male gray wolf which chases a criminal when a carnivore eats a herbivore. He encounters and agonizes over the darkness of society behind the surface peace. BEASTARS evokes the issue of confrontational coexistence in human society that arises due to the essential differences between carnivores and herbivores. Therefore, BEASTARS is wellreceived for its fresh expression and sense of subject matters. However, despite these timely topics, BEASTARS has not yet become the subject of academic research. At first glance, BEASTARS’s worldview based on essentialism seems to expose the impossibility of coexistence between different groups. Nevertheless, in terms of exploring the possibility of coexistence, BEASTARS has great implications in this era where harmony and fusion have emerged as global topics. Since BEASTARS’s essentialism represents multiculturalism in modern society, this paper examined how BEASTARS is related to Japan’s own policy of multiculturalism, i.e. multicultural coexistence.
