메도루마 문학이 현실에 맞서는 방법 ― 「평화거리라 이름 붙여진 길을 걸으며」와 「나비떼 나무」를 중심으로 ―
오키나와전투의 기억을 다루는 메도루마 슌의 문학은 독자들에게 전쟁을 추체험하 게 한다. 또 그의 문학에는 오키나와 사회의 복잡하고 다면적인 갈등이 드러나는 경우 가 많다. 메도루마의 많은 작품들에서 고독한 할머니가 등장하는데, 그러한 작품에서는 등장인물이 그러한 할머니와 만남으로써 과거의 기억과 마주하고 그것과 관계 맺기를 요청받는다. 본 논문에서는 「평화거리라 이름 붙여진 길을 걸으며」(1986)와 「나비떼 나무」(2000) 에 초점을 맞추어, 메도루마 문학이 어떻게 오키나와의 어려운 현실을 그려내며 거기에 맞서려고 하는지 살펴보았다. 두 작품에서는 우타와 고제이라는 인지증에 걸린 할머니 가 등장하는데, 이들이 과거와 현재가 뒤섞인 시간을 살고 있다는 것은 오키나와전투의 트라우마적인 기억이 현재에 침입해 들어오는 모습을 보여주는 동시에, 그러한 과거가 오키나와의 현재와 겹쳐져 있음을 시사한다. 「평화거리」는 보통 천황제에 대한 상징적 인 저항을 그리고 있다고 평가되지만, 그 외에도 우타를 통해 본토와 오키나와라는 대 립을 넘어서는 다양한 갈등을 보여준다. 우타가 깨트리는 ‘평화’는 많은 의미를 함축하 고 있으며, 작품은 오키나와의 바깥에 있는 사람들이 손쉽게 대항을 이야기하는 것을 경계하기도 한다. 「나비떼 나무」는 오키나와의 전통문화를 배경으로 고제이가 부각시 키는 여러 가지 대립을 드러내면서, 초점인물인 요시아키를 통해 고제이나 그가 대표하 는 여러 아픔과 관계 맺을 수 있는 가능성을 모색한다. 메도루마 문학은 독자들에게도 이 같은 관계 맺기를 요청하는 동시에, 그러한 문학을 읽는 것이 현실의 싸움과 무관할 수 없음을 일깨워준다.

Medoruma Shun and Resisting the Realities of Okinawa : Focusing on Walking a Street Named Peace and Tree of Butterflies
Medoruma Shun's novels which deal with the memories of the Battle of Okinawa give the readers a chance to reexperience the battle. In addition, his literature often reveals the complex and multifaceted conflicts in Okinawa society. The present paper, focusing on Walking a Street Named Peace(1986) and Trees of Butterflies(2000), analyzed how Medoruma’s novels have depicted the complicated and difficult reality of Okinawa and imagined how to oppose to it. In each of these two works, Uta and Gozei, an dementiastricken old woman appeared. They are living in a time where past and present are mixed, which showed traumatic memories of the war invading the present. And it suggests that such past overlaps with the present of Okinawa, where continued struggle against military bases still exists. Walking a Street Named Peace is considered to represent resistance to the emperor symbolically; however the work also reveals that there are multiple conflicts. And the work is also critical of talking about Okinawa’s fight easily. The novel Trees of Butterflies shows various conflicts highlighted by Gozei’s presence invading Okinawa's traditional culture, and through Yoshiaki, the focal character, seeks the possibility to relate to Gozei or the pain she represents. Medoruma’s novels ask the readers to establish such a relationship and remind them that reading such literature cannot be irrelevant to the fight that is currently taking place in Okinawa.
