‘류큐사’는 어떻게 ‘국사’에 편입되었나 ― 아키야마 겐조(秋山謙蔵)의 사례를 중심으로 ―
이 글은 전쟁 전 활약한 국사학자 아키야마 겐조에 주목해 류큐･오키나와의 역사가 근대 일본의 국사학에 어떻게 자리매김되어 갔는지 살펴보는 데에 목적이 있다. 아키야 마는 류큐를 포함한 동아교섭사에 관한 중요한 연구를 진행했다. 그런데 과거 오키나와 및 일본의 대외교섭을 전전･전중기 국책으로서의 대외진출의 전사(前史)로 규정하기도 했다. 패전 후 전쟁협력자라는 낙인과 함께 그는 공직에서 추방되었다. 그런 이유로 그 의 연구는 깊이 파묻혀 버려 충분한 비판적 검토를 받지 않은 채 현재에 이르고 있다. 위 문제에 대한 중요한 단서를 1924년 도쿄제대 입학을 앞둔 아키야마의 오키나와 슈리성 여행에서 찾을 수 있다. 당시 슈리성 정전은 헐리기로 결정되어 있었다. 그런데 그 계획은 아키야마의 오키나와 여행 직후 건축사학이나 국사학과 같은 이른바 아카데 미즘에 의해 저지되고 슈리성은 보존되게 되었다. 이러한 슈리성의 사례는 류큐왕국의 역사가 지워지고 사라진 것이 아니라, 국사학에 지탱되어 류큐왕국의 해상교역의 과거 가 정통한 국사학의 일부로 그 의미를 부여받게 되었음을 노정한다. 아키야마가 자신의 연구의 출발점이 황폐함이 극에 달했던 슈리성을 목도하면서라고 거듭 밝힌 이유가 거 기에 있다. 국사학과 입학 이후 패전까지 이루어진 아키야마의 연구는, 말하자면 국사 학 속에 류큐사를 자리매김해간 실천적 행보였던 것이다. 류큐가 해양국가로 활발하게 활동했던 옛 역사가 오키나와의 독자성을 주장하는 과 거로 다시 부상하느냐의 여부는 아키야마 내지 국사학이 부여한 역사적 의의와 어떤 형태로 마주하느냐에 달려 있다.

How was the History of Ryukyu Incorporated into the History of Japan? : A Study of Kenzo Akiyama’s Work
This paper focused on Kenzo Akiyama, a historian in the prewar period, to examine how the history of Ryukyu secured a place in the history of Japan. Specifically, Akiyama’s pioneering study on Japan's external relations before modern times has been evaluated and discussed in this paper. Akiyama organized his articles into two books in 1939 and 1944, and wrote the prefaces based on his visit to Shuri-jo Castle in Okinawa in 1924, the year before starting his study at Tokyo Imperial University. In these prefaces, he mentioned that this visit had led him to study the history of Japan. The period 1924-25 was a turning point for Shuri-jo when its demolition was cancelled and preservation started as the National treasure building. In this case, the study of the history of Japan as an academician was a significant venture to promote the preservation and research of Shuri-jo. Shuri-jo, which embodied the history of Ryukyu, survived as a valuable symbol of the history of Japan. Akiyama played the vital role in describing the history of Ryukyu as a part of the history of Japan. To note, the well-known historical image of Ryukyu, the kingdom of the sea that flourished through trade with the neighboring Asian countries, started not as Okinawa's unique history but as a part of the history of Japan.
