The View of Family in Miyazaki Hayao's “Howl's Moving Castle”

The objective of this research is to study the views of the family described in Miyazaki Hayao's “Howl's Moving Castle (2004)”, which is based on the British novel “Howl's Moving Castle (1986)”. First, it was analyzed how biological relationships relate to family consciousness. The original novel showed that biological relationships are closely related to family consciousness, while the film did not highlight such thing. Poor biological relationships are the characteristics of Japanese families. Next, a deep connection was observed between the habitation form and the family's consciousness in common in both novel and film. The family members living in Howl's castle were not kindred, but were united around Calcifer, a brazier. The Howl's family, comprising non-blood related people, inherited the characteristics of a Japanese family with a pseudo-family system and reflected a diversified family. Finally, analysis of the film found that not only romantic love, but maternal love was also important. Therefore, the Howl's family had a de-family form, but at the same time comprised elements of a modern family. The film has succeeded in localizing British novels to reflect the present age while keeping the characteristics of traditional Japanese families alive.
