미 점령기 일본 스포츠의 정치성과 신체성 ― 권투의 부활을 중심으로 ―
본 논문은 미 점령기 일본의 스포츠 문화가 가지는 정치성 및 신체성에 대해 주목한 것으로 특히 권투 종목을 통해 전후 일미관계를 분석하고자 한 것이다. 미 점령군은 군국주의와의 관련을 이유로 유도와 검도를 엄격하게 금지하는 한편, 자유 경쟁이나 민주주의 이념 보급을 위해 야구와 권투 등의 종목을 적극 장려했다. 권투는 전시 하의 정신론과 전후의 과학론의 대비를 대변하는 스포츠로서, 전전과 전후의 패러다임의 전환을 선명하게 제시하고 동시에 패전 일본의 향후 목표를 구체화시킨 종목으로 여겨지고 있었다. 즉, 맹목적으로 투쟁 의지만 강조하는 일본 권투와 과학적인 기술을 연마하는 미국 권투를 대비시켜 양국의 문화적 선진도의 격차를 강조하고, 나아가 미국의 지도에 따라 일본 권투가 체계화되는 과정을 통해 훼손된 일본의 남성성을 복권시키려 했던 것이다. 말하자면 권투는 전전과 전후를 관통하면서 시대정신을 담아내는 매체 역할을 해 왔고, 패전을 기점으로 신체에 관한 접근법이 ‘정신’에서 ‘과학’으로 이행되었다는 것을 대중에게 직관적으로 제시하고 있었다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 중요한 것은 전후 일본의 과학 신화란 전전의 ‘정신주의’에 대한 절대적인 신봉이 전후의 ‘과학주의’로 치환된 결과일 뿐, 그것은 매우 허약하고 허망한 외피에 지나지 않는다는 점이다. 전전과 전후를 관통하는 권투의 신체성이란 불안정한 현실을 은폐하고 새로운 이념과 신화를 배태하기 위한 온전한 정치적 알리바이였을지도 모른다.

The Politics and Physicality of Japanese Sports during the US Occupation : Focusing on the Revival of Boxing
The present study attempted to analyze postwar Japan-US relations through the boxing in particular by focusing on the politics and physicality of Japanese sports culture during the US occupation. As a sport representing the contrast between the prewar theory of the Japanese spirit and the postwar scientific attitude, boxing offered a clear transition between the pre- and postwar paradigm and revealed in detail the goals of Japan after losing the war. In other words, by contrasting Japanese boxing with its emphasis solely on the fighting spirit and American boxing with its cultivation of scientific technology, it highlighted the gap in cultural advancement between Japan and the US, and the process of systematizing Japanese boxing was interpreted as the process of restoring the damaged masculinity of Japan. In that sense, boxing intuitively revealed to the people how the approach toward the body, since the loss of the war, had transitioned from the ‘spirit’ to ‘science’. However, it is important that the science myth of postwar Japan was simply the result of substituting absolute faith in prewar ‘spiritualism’ with postwar ‘scientism’ and nothing but an extremely fragile and futile husk. Perhaps the physicality of boxing, penetrating the pre- and postwar periods, was the intact, political alibi for originating a new ideology and myth while concealing an unstable reality.
