A Study about Acceptance of Almond(2017) in Japan : Focusing on Juvenile Delinquency

Almond by Sohn Won-pyung won the unprecedented first place in the 17th Japanese Booksellers Award’s ‘Part of Translated novels’ in 2020. The K-Literature boom may be one of the external reasons for this award, In the present work, I tried to focus on the Juvenile delinquency described in Almond. Two boys named Yun-jae Sun and Gon are mentioned in Almond. Yun-jae Sun had difficulty in feeling emotions, and Gon had a dark scar to become a delinquent boy. Because these boys matched with what nowadays Japanese people are afraid of, such as Juvenile serial murders or Psychopath, Almond was able to trigger the interest of the Japanese readers. The important thing is that the boys did not commit any crime at the end. This leaves two impacts on the Japanese readers. First, Almond pointed out certain juvenile problems which are avoided in the name of psychopath. Second, Almond provided the comfort and healing from a positive perspective and happy ending, which is totally different from recent Japanese juvenile crime novels or Iyamisuv (eww mystery). This means that Almond pointed out and solved the problems which could not be solved by Japanese own novels. Focusing on juvenile delinquency might be unusual in K-literature studies. Keeping the current study as a base, I believe the K-literature study can expand its research field.
