애니메이션 속 ‘수목(樹木)’의 신화적 요소 ─ 일본 신화와 『이웃집 도토로』 『이세계 식당』 『피아노의 숲』 『미요리의 숲』을 중심으로 ─
본고는 일본신화와 일본애니메이션 『이웃집 도토로』, 『이세계 식당』, 『피아노의 숲』, 『미요리의 숲』을 중심으로 ‘수목’ 관련 모티프와 일본의 상대 문헌 속 신화적 요소를 비교･분석하여 각각의 ‘이미지 차용’이 의미하는 상징성을 탐색하는 것에 그 목적이 있다. 연구방법은 일본 최고(最古) 문헌인 『고사기(古事記)』, 『일본서기(日本書紀)』, 『풍토기(風土記)』를 비교텍스트로 하여 신화 속 전승을 추출하고, 각 애니메이션 속 ‘수목 터널’과 ‘나무 밑동’, ‘거목 구스노키’, ‘숲’이라는 장치를 핵심 키워드로 비교･고찰하였다. 각각의 모티프들은 공통으로 공간적 배경을 위한 장치였으며 동시에 이계(異界)와 현계(現界)를 넘나들며 신의 사자인 정령과 인간들이 소통하는 ‘이동’과 ‘통로’의 이미지로 차용, 상징화되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 여기에 ‘거목 숭배 사상’이 더해져 인간 세상과 분리된 그 ‘어떤 세계’의 상징적 이미지로 경외과 숭배의 대상으로 묘사되고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본고는 일본의 고대시대를 중심으로 일본신화 전승고증을 통해 일본인의 수목 사상과의 관계성을 규명했다는 점이 기존 연구과 차별성이 있다. 특히 『이웃집 도토로』를 제외한 나머지 3작품 속 ‘수목 사상’ 대한 ‘신화적 접근’이 최초라는 점에 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있겠다. 마지막으로 수목 사상에 대한 이미지 ‘변용’ 모티프 분석이 약간의 아쉬움으로 남지만 추후 과제에서 규명하고자 한다.

The Mythical Elements of “Tree” in Animation : Focusing on Japanese Mythology, My Neighbor Totoro, Another World Restaurant, The Piano Forest, and Miyori Forest
The purpose of the present study was to explore the symbolism of each “image appropriation” by comparing and analyzing motifs related to “wood” and mythological elements in Japanese classical literatures focusing on Japanese animation My Neighbor Totoro, Another World Restaurant, “The Piano Forest,” and “Miyori Forest.” The research methodology extracted the transmission of myths from Japan's oldest literature, Kosagi, and Pungtogi as comparative texts. They were compared and considered based on keywords, such as “Wood Tunnel,” “Big Tree Gusunoki,” and “Forest” in each animation. Each motif served as a common device for spatial background, and symbolized the images of “movement” and “path” through which spirits and humans, the lions of God, communicate. In addition to this, the idea of “big tree worship” was added to show that it was used as an object of worship and as a symbolic image which separated “a certain world” from the human world. This paper is different from the previous studies in that it investigated the relationship between Japanese people's tree ideas through historical records of Japanese mythology, centering on the ancient era of Japan. In particular, it can be said that it is meaningful that it is the first “mythical approach” to “wood thought” in the remaining three works except for My Neighbor Totoro. Finally, the analysis of the image “change” motif for tree ideas remains a little disappointing, but we will investigate it in future.
