A Study on Taiwan Representation by Taihoku Higher School in 1930s : Focus on Shohu the Japanese-Language Magazine

The current study aimed to analyze a representation of ‘Taiwan’in the 1930s at Taihoku Higher School through its Japanese magazine, Shohu. Taihoku Higher School is a government-funded institution for higher education with Japanese-Taiwanese co-education curriculum during the colonial period -. Unlike in the 1920s, when every article in Shohuwas written by Japanese residents in Taiwan, in 1930s, distinct participation of Taiwanese could be found in Shohu, and with time, the Taiwanese contribution to the magazine increased. Fumihiko Hara, a Japanese author, described Taiwan as a land of opportunity inhis novels, Rain Shower and Natsukashiki-Rinjin. However, the author wanted to return to Japan as the 1930s Great Depression took its toll in Taiwan. Contrary to 1920s, both literatures describe characters who are Japanese residents in Taiwan, indicating Taiwan as a suitable place to live or where one should return. It could be said from these findings that a double identity generated among the Japanese residents in Taiwan in the 1930s. On another side, Liu Ying, a Taiwanese author, showed in his novel, Kajitsu, that Taiwanese people lived a hard life due to depression of a lower-class Taiwanese heroine, who was sold to the rich. The work reflects stratification and language barriers amongst the Taiwanese people. The Chinese-speaking heroine was not able to communicate with her Japanese-speaking little sister, due to Imperial Japan’s forced linguistic policies.
