The Meaning of Cross-Cultural Contact with Respect to the Notion of Contact Zone : Focusing on Prostitution at the Japanese Town ‘Waegwan’ in the Joseon Era

The current study attempted to examine the crosscultural contact between Korea and Japan in the Joseon era by using the notion of contact zone, mainly focusing on the space called Waegwan as a path to the foundation of cultural “compromise” between the two nations. The contact zone in this paper refers to a spatial idea which explains a diversity of sociocultural agents’ gathering, crash, and collision with each other, which eventually led to negotiation between different cultures. However, the reality is that this concept has not received any attention in the Korean academic fields even though it is indispensable when the story of cultural contacts and exchanges comes up. Thus, this paper will discuss the latest notion of contact zone which states that the contact zone can be applied even to a historical issue in the Joseon era through the lens of the space, Waegwan. Waegwan is a foreign concession where Japanese people settled in the land of Joseon to live with various objectives and exchanges. It is a place located in Dongrae(Busan) not only for diplomacy and commerce between Joseon and Japan but also for cultural exchange with each other at an individual level. The entire town of Waegwan was surrounded by walls, controlled and guarded by the Joseon government, but it was a land where the flavors of different cultures could be experienced by the people. To note, prostitution in Waegwan is one of the valuable cases which describes contact zone with the situational elements in the Joseon era. Considering the phenomena which show how a plurality of cultures and people could coexist in a specific space, this paper indicates the approach of Waegwan’s historical role and function and also tries to build a case on the concept of contact zone with the idea of cultural diversity.
