사키야마 다미 ｢유라티쿠 유리티쿠｣를 읽기 위하여 - 소문과 수다, 그리고 섬 -
이 글은 오키나와의 여성 작가 사키야마 다미의 작품 「유라티쿠 유리티쿠」를 면밀하게 읽기 위해 시도된 것으로, 특히 구전과 소문이라는 소설적 장치에 주목해 보았다. 이를 통해 궁극적으로는 오키나와 표상, 나아가서는 타자 표상의 정치성에 관해 고찰해 보고자 했다. 먼저 이 작품의 공간적 배경인 호타라 섬은 오키나와의 알레고리나 마찬가지다. 그러나 작품 속의 호타라 섬과 실존하는 오키나와는 매우 상반된 이미지를 가진다. 건강하고 밝은 기운이 넘치는 오키나와 이미지와는 달리 호타라 섬에는 늙은 남성 노인들만 살고 있으며 이들은 죽을 날만 기다리며 산책과 수다로 일과를 보내고 있을 뿐이다. 이 같은 호타라 섬의 일상을 작가는 구전 방식으로 묘사해 보인다. 호타라 섬을, 다시 말해 오키나와를 기록이 아닌 구술, 구전의 방식으로 전달하는 것은 오키나와를 불변하는 ‘고정 텍스트’로 다루지 않고 이른바 ‘열린 텍스트’로 규정하겠다는 작가의 의도에 다름 아니다. 나아가 이 작품은 등장인물의 수다나 소문에 의해 내용이 전개된다. 수다와 소문은 공동체의 질서를 어지럽히는 내용이기도 하고 여성들과의 신체적 관계를 은밀하게 다루는 내용이기도 하다. 즉, 남성들로만 구성된 수다 자리에서 모계사회인 호타라 섬은 위협을 받기도 하고 조롱당하기도 하는 것이다. 이처럼 소문과 수다는 호타라 섬 공동체의 균열과 파열을 예고하는 것이기도 했다. 요약하자면 「유라티쿠 유리티쿠」는 소문이나 수다와 같은 구술 행위를 다시 구전하는 텍스트라고 정의할 수 있다. 구전 텍스트가 가지는 유동성, 개방성, 창조성 등을 참조한다면 오로지 구전으로만 전해지는 호타라 섬 이야기는 변용의 가능성이 잠복되어 있는 텍스트이며 심지어 공동체에 의해 전복될 수 있는 텍스트이기도 하다. 이 작품에서 구전이나 소문이라는 장치가 동원된 이유는 오키나와에 대한 서사를 끊임없이 유예시키고, 지정된 표상이 혁명적으로 전복될 수 있다는 가능성을 주장하기 위해서일 것이다.

To read Yuratiku Yuritiku written by Sakiyama Tami
This paper presents a study that attempted a detailed analysis of the novel Yuratiku Yuritiku, written by the woman novelist Sakiyama Tami in Okinawa. Especially, the author paid attention to the mechanism of the novel such as oral tradition and rumor. Eventually, this thesis intends to investigate the politics of representing Okinawa, furthermore the others. The background of this work is Hotara island. Hotara island refers to Okinawa but is very different from the Okinawa that exists today. Contrary to the healthy and bright image of Okinawa, old men live there. They wait for death, spending time chatting only. These daily lives on Hotara island are described in the way of oral tradition. The author expressed Hotara, that is, Okinawa in the way of an oral statement and oral tradition, rather than a recording. She intended to see Okinawa in 'open text', as opposed to dealing with the island as 'fixed text' which is not changed forever. The story of this work develops with the chatter or rumors of the characters. This chatter or rumor includes content to disturb the order of a community or to describe sexual relations with women in a furtive way. That is, at the place where the men engage in chatter, Hotara island, matriarchal society is thrilled or mocked. Thus, rumor and chatter predict that the community of Hotara island will disintegrate. In short, Yuratiku Yuritiku can be a text to hand down an oral statement such as chatter or rumor again. If flexibility, openness, creativity etc. of oral traditional text are referred, the story about Hotara island handed down only by oral tradition is text in which the possibility of transformation is hidden. At the same time, the story is a text that can be overthrown by the community. The work uses mechanisms such as oral statements and rumors to continuously put off narrative about Okinawa and to insist the possibility that existing representation can be overthrown in a revolutional way.
