Reconstructing Japanese Aesthetics in the 1970 Japan World Exposition : Focus on Taro Okamoto's Tower of the Sun

This paper examines the construction of Japanese aesthetics by rediscovering tradition in postwar Japan by focusing on the 1970 Japan World Exposition (Expo’70) held in Osaka. Positing that Expo’70 was an event for cultural diplomacy policies representing the national image, this paper presents an analysis of Taro Okamoto's theme exhibition and the Tower of the Sun. Okamoto emphasized the anti-aesthetic, primitive, dynamic, and vital Jomon aesthetics found in Jomon pottery, which was not accepted as Japanese tradition at the time. Through these aesthetics, he aimed to find a breakthrough for new Japanese culture and tried to reinterpret the traditions. Okamoto’s theory on Japanese culture, detailed in his essay “On Jomon Pottery,” was accepted as accurate logic to establish a new tradition for postwar Japan and played a role in laying the foundation for postwar rehabilitation, which was why he was recruited as the producer for the theme exhibition. Okamoto went further and aimed to break the concept of tradition itself from the bounds of the nation-state and worked to expand the concept to become a universal concept searching for the roots of mankind. He also tried to realize these views towards tradition and art through the exhibition theme and the Tower of the Sun. Okamoto’s works abundantly complemented the nationalized tradition Japan needed in order to become a cultural power.
