How to write and read words that contain many possible meanings in the Korean Translation of Waka

Park, Ilho

(성신여자대학교 교수, 일본고전문학)

If a detailed translation of Waka does not retain the rhythm and main words, focusing on the function and intention of the word may have many possible meanings. The resulting translation is untruthful to the original waka. In the case of ‘Mitate’, if the words that are used are not found in Korean language, the translation can be difficult, whereas it can be easy as long as alternative words exist. However, the function of Mitate, which is intended to find new relations of external objects and to share the delight of the discovery, should be translated to be clearly effective in the poem. ‘Mononona’ has a characteristic that is defined as concealment and makes us enjoy the difference in elevation between revealing and concealing. Thus, we cannot help feeling amazed at the brilliance of the difference. Incidentally, the highly concealing and revealing can be expressed with only the sound of the language, because the corresponding sound of a word in another language cannot completely convey the sound and meaning hidden in the original waka‘Mononona’. If he or she is a Korean user and has no knowledge of the previous work, ‘Honkadori’ will never have poetic significance. It is because Honkadori performs the poetic promise between the writer and the receiver rather than changing the linguistic expression. Therefore, this skill cannot be easily understood without annotating poems when it is translated into another language.
