In this study, we scrutinized previous studies on the agent markers of Japanese passives and examined existing reviews, based on the investigation of concrete examples. The results indicated that the restriction of the animate-agent markerni” in inanimate-subject passive sentences is highly effective, but it is difficult to understand that the use of “ni yotte,” which does not have this restriction, increased and contributed to the development of Japanese passives since the beginning of modern times. Besides, it has been confirmed that the concept of affectivity, which is a characteristic of the agent marker “ni,” is limited to the case when only “ni” is allowed, and situations in which either one of two markers, such as “ni” and “ni yotte” are allowed, are unrelated to the concept of affectivity. In actual examples, the marker “ni yotte” was found not be chosen for the neutral and objective description. The reason was that the use of “ni” is possible when the agent is a syntactically indispensable constituent, whereas the marker “ni yotte” should be used when the agent is not a indispensable constituent. Based on this investigation, Japanese passives can be classified into three types according to the acceptability of the two markers “ni” and “ni yotte”. First, ni-passives are two-place predicates requiring the action object and agent as indispensable constituents, as well as a typical type of animate-subject passive sentence expressing affectivity, such as inconveniences. Second, passive sentences for which either marker is acceptable are two-place predicates requiring an action object and the agent as indispensable constituents, and they are not associated with affectivity. Additionally, these sentences are a typical type of inanimate-subject passive sentence for the audio-visual description of situations. Third, ni yotte-passives are one-place predicates requiring only the action object as an indispensable constituent unrelated to affectivity. These sentences correspond to inanimate-subject passive sentences that have developed since the onset of modern times. Ni-passives and passive sentences for which either marker is acceptable existed in pre-modern times, whereas ni yotte-passives have further developed since modern times. Furthermore, a type of passive sentence of which the prevalence has rapidly increased more recently is a passive sentence in which the agent is not marked. That is, the change in Japanese passives can be understood as the structural expansion from two-place predicates in pre-modern times to today's one-place predicates that have been in use since the beginning of modern times.
