A study of the zainichi magazine 『Mindo』

Shin Jae-min

This study attempted to analyze the magazine 『Mindo』, which targets Korean residents in Japan (the zainichi people) as readers. The magazine 『Mindo』 was established as a comprehensive literary magazine for the zainichi people who lacked opportunities to engage in literary and cultural activities. This magazine also tried to establish the identity of the zainichi people who were in their 80's. In the late 1980s, communism in Eastern Europe was gradually collapsing. This period is also known as the time during which the connection between Korea and the zainichi was weakened because of the appearance of the third generation of zainichi. 『Mindo』 was established in the context of this historical period. This magazine aimed to be the center of the zainichi people's cultural movement, and also tried to provide them with a free literary space. The magazine 『Mindo』 was the first comprehensive literature magazine of the zainichi people. The magazine also led the cultural movement to build the diaspora identity of the zainichi people by focusing on the public zainichi society.
