A Study on the Word Type and Morpheme of Hybrid Words in Nippojisyo

This research investigated the condition of hybrid words at the end of the Muromachi period by focusing on the word type and morphemes based on Nippojisyo. First, the word type of hybrid words is categorized into 12 forms, all of which are hybrid words that were formed by combining their Japanese origin with their Chinese origin. Although words were borrowed from Portuguese when Nippojisyo was compiled, hybrid words with a combined Japanese origin and loanword/Chinese origin could not have been used. Second, examining the distribution of word class according to word type, various parts of speech were discovered for the form Chinese origin + Japanese origin, whilst hybrid words that are nouns were the only characteristic of the form of Japanese origin + Chinese origin. Third, function words outnumbered content words in Japanese morphemes, and a single morpheme was generally used for a single word class as a word-formation element. On the other hand, free morphemes were overwhelmingly used more often than bound morphemes in the case of Chinese morphemes. In addition, a number of cases were found in which a single morpheme was used for more than two parts of speech as a word-formation element. Particularly, in the word class, free morphemes had a greater tendency than bound morphemes to form various hybrid words.
