Relationship between Second Language Acquisition and Universal Grammar — Focusing on Binding Theory

This paper presents a study of the relationship between Universal Grammar (UG) and Second Language Acquisition. Our objective was to determine the exact extent to which UG is utilized when learning a second language. Cook (1988) offered three possibilities. That is: i) UG is fully and directly utilized, ii) UG is partly and indirectly utilized and iii) acquisition proceeds without utilizing any part of UG. We conducted a survey to establish how native speakers of Korean learn the Japanese word “Jibun,” a kind of anaphor of which the antecedent is the subject or the topic of a sentence. We found that they understand the referent(s) of “jibun” well in simple sentences whereas the percentage of correct answers decreases in complex sentences such as causatives and passives. An example is “Taro wa Hanako ni jibun no kami o kirareta (Taro had his hair cut. Or Taro was irritated by the fact that Hanako had had her hair cut.),” where “jibun” is interpreted as referring to either Taro (the former interpretation) or Hanako (the latter). This is because “the language transfer” is affected. That is, the fact that the corresponding sentence in Korean never refers to Hanako leads them to the wrong answer. The expressions that seem to correspond to those in their native language are easy to acquire, whereas those that are not are difficult to learn. Thus, we concluded that, among Cook's (1988) three hypotheses mentioned above, the second best explains our observations.
