Third World Imagination in Japanese Postwar Literature- the World and Literature as a Centrifugal Force -

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate Third World Literature and the Complete Series of World Literature, which exerted influence as a centrifugal force in Japanese postwar literature. The literature can be divided into the following two categories. First, I examine the connection between the Afro-Asian Writers` Association and the Third World Literature. The effect of Third World Literature on Japanese literature was that Japanese literary writers accepted Asian and African literature more than ever, and tried to transform society through literature; however, after the beginning of the period of high growth, nationalism, which contained the possibility of solidarity since the 1950s, began to function as a centripetal force in Japanese society. Second, through investigating the Complete Series of World Literature, which was published by Ikezawa Natsuki since 2007, I aim to clarify how Japanese literature has embraced world literature. Ikezawa's collection obviously differs from the previous Complete Series of World Literature in Japan. These two phenomena, which manifested in postwar Japan, show the centrifugal force surrounding the world recognition of post-war period Japanese literature.
