The Discourse of Living Culture and Imperial Ideology in Women's Magazines

This study set out to extract the major types of wartime discourse and imperial ideologies in Japan from the discourse of living culture in Women, which was published in the 1930s, to analyze their content and meanings. The elucidation of magazines that were sensitive to social backgrounds was an appropriate means for the nationalist ideology to win women over and turn them into subjects of the empire. The readers of Women were women at a high intellectual level who actively accepted the modern living culture and social discourse, which means that the magazine was a fit choice to serve as the pivot of women's energy unity in the colony. Women demonstrated the ways according to which the wartime discipline and authority intervened in the popular discourse in which its readers reacted to those political and social conditions. The magazine's discourse about living culture promoted saving and life improvement as national and social duties and elevated consumption, a private matter, to the national level. A follow-up study would need to compare and examine the texts published at the end of Japanese rule and those after Liberation. This would make it possible to understand the phenomenon of the discourse of women's magazines intervening in the gender independence within the living culture.
