A Study on the two forms of “Ghost in the Shell” : A comparison between 1995 and 2017, or major and Major

This article discusses the two forms of “Ghost in the Shell.” One is an animation by Oshii Mamoru, and the other is a movie by Rupert Sanders starring Scarlett Johansson. Unlike the worldwide enthusiasm for the animated film “Ghost in the Shell” (1995), the movie “Ghost in the Shell” (2017) ended in misfortune. Why did it fail? In the movie, the target was simplified to excessive technology and its monopolistic enterprise. The main character, Major, is depicted as a person who completes the politics of identity by looking for her “real” past. The problem is that the subject of self-identity presented here is too simple and one-sided. Unlike the animation, which actively accepted and positively declared the birth of a new life and subject represented by the convergence of the heroine Kusanagi Motoko and the Puppet Master, the movie ended with a story of modern self-loss and recovery by the heroine Major. There is a large difference between the common noun “major (소령)” and the proper noun “Major (메이저)”. In the 1980s and 90s, the world including Japan experienced a post-modern atmosphere stronger than ever. It is important to note that at the very moment when ideas and attempts to transcend modern subjects and anthropocentrism erupted, the animated film “Ghost in the Shell” was released to the world and was enthusiastically accepted. Considering the criticism and the contemporary context of the animation, it sufficed to receive the attention and praise of the world.
