A Study on Hormone Culture, a Magazine for Koreans in Japan : Focusing on its Status and Meanings in the History of Korean Magazines in Japan

The purpose of this study is to look into the content and features of Hormone Culture, a magazine for Koreans in Japan, and to identify the role and status Hormone Culture takes in the context of the history of Korean magazines in Japan. In the 1990s, when the magazine appeared, the circumstances of the Korean society and magazines in Japan were changing in a way that was different from ever before. Third-generation Koreans came to form the majority in the composition of generations, thus causing the existing associations and houses of Korean residents in Japan to become notably weaker in their ethnically persuasive power. From the viewpoint of research into the magazine media, externally, the diversity of the Japanese media and decline in print journalism directly influenced the magazine media. Internally, third-generation Koreans were emerging as the main agent of expression, which was not a mere change in generations because it became more difficult to express, through the Korean magazines in Japan, discourse on Koreans in Japan at a collective level. Hormone Culture is a magazine that emerged from the midst of these changes. The significance of the magazine can be thought to be valuable, because it shed light upon everyday experiences and the realities of the general public, particularly Koreans living in Japan. At the same time it actively linked the "boundary status" of the Koreans to actual issues in reality, thus seeking the ground for general opinions that is quite different from previous ones.
