유토피아소설로서 『아름다운 마을(美しき町)』의 가능성과 한계 ― 사토 하루오의 ‘유토피아’ 전유를 중심으로 ―
이 글은 사토 하루오의 『아름다운 마을』을 통해서 근대 일본문학 속의 유토피아의 가능성과 한계를 검증하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 즉 이 글에서는 당시 도쿄 안에 ‘아름다운 마을’을 건설하려는 유토피아적 프로그램은 왜 실패할 수밖에 없었고, 그 실패의 의미는 무엇인지를 당시의 시대적 상황 등을 고려하면서 고찰해본다. 가와사키의 유토피아 충동은 제1차 세계대전 이후 새롭게 등장한 금본위 금융경제 속에서 자본의 투여대상으로서 일본을 발견할 수 있다는 경제적 조건 하에 유토피아 프로그램으로 확장되는데, 만약 그것이 계획대로 성공한다면, 서구자본에 의한 일본의 식민화라는 측면이 발생할 수밖에 없다. 또한 ‘협동사회주의’라는 이념을 유토피아 장르를 통해서 실현하려고 했던 윌리엄 모리스의 『어디에도 없는 곳으로부터의 소식』의 영향은, 자본가에 의한 유토피아 프로그램의 파정에 내적 필연성을 부여한다. 결국 이 텍스트는 일본 근대문학에서의 ‘유토피아’라는 장르의 가능성을 열었음에도 불구하고, 일본에서 그것이 불가능하다는 것을 아포리아적으로 보여줬을 뿐만 아니라, 유토피아를 ‘마음’의 문제로 축소시킴으로써, 이후 문학이 일본의 전체주의화에 기여하게 되었다는 점에서 그 한계가 있다.

The Possibilities and Limitations of “A Beautiful Village” As a Utopian Novel : focusing on the appropriation of ‘utopia’ by Sato Haruo
This article aims to examine the possibilities and limitation of the concept of utopia in modern Japanese literature, through “The Beautiful Village” of Sato Haruo. This article examines why utopian programs to build ‘beautiful villages’ in Tokyo failed, and what the meaning of the failure was, taking into account the situation of the time. Kawasaki's utopia impulse expands into a utopian program under the economic conditions by finding Japan, as the object of capital investment in the gold-funded financial economy, to be newly emerging after the First World War. However, if it were to succeed as planned, there would be no other way than to colonize. The influence of William Morris' “News from Nowhere,” which attempted to realize the idea of “cooperative socialism” through the utopian genre, provides the internal necessity for the dissolution of utopian programs by capitalists in the text. Although this text opened the possibility of a genre called ‘utopia’ in Japanese modern literature, it has limit that showed not only that a utopia was ironically impossible in Japan but also minimized utopia as a problem of the ‘mind’ that it contributed to Japanese fascism.
