항일(抗日)과 향수(鄕愁)의 길항 ― 타이완 영화는 식민지 시대를 어떻게 그리고 있나 ―
이 논문은 최근 흥행에 성공한 타이완 영화들 속에 드러나는 일본의 식민지 기억을 분석하였다. 그 기억이 한국과 어떻게 다른지를 찾아보고, 그러한 기억의 차이가 어디서 생겨났는지에 대해서 고찰해보았다. 일본인에 저항하여 반란을 일으킨 타이완 원주민을 그린 영화 <세에딕 발레(Seediq Bale)> (2011)는 항일 영화로 보아도 손색없는 작품이다. 반면에 타이완인과 일본인이 한 팀을 이루어 일본 고교야구 대회 고시엔에서 준우승을 차지하는 과정을 그린 는 마치 ‘대동아공영권’을 선전하는 영화처럼 느껴진다. 이처럼 영화 속에서 드러나는 타이완 사람들의 식민지 시대에 대한 기억에는 한국인이 공유할 수 있는 측면이 많기도 하면서도, 도저히 받아들이기 힘든 그들만의 독특함이 나타나기도 한다. 그러한 독특함, 다시 말하면 한국과의 차이점은 여러 측면에서 분석 가능하다. 타이완은 식민지 이전에 독립된 국가가 아니었고, 타이완의 정체성은 식민지 시대에 형성되었다. 식민지가 끝난 뒤 들어온 국민당에 대한 반발은 일본 식민지 시대에 대한 긍정론으로 이어졌다. 거꾸로 식민지 시대를 부정하면 국민당의 역사관을 받아들이는 자로 인식되는 것이다. 영화를 통해서 본 타이완의 식민지 시대에 대한 기억은 한국이 공감할 수 있는 부분과 그렇지 못한 부분이 극명하다. 타이완과 한국은 모두 일본의 식민지였지만, 그 시대에 대한 경험이 전부 같았던 것은 아니다. 따라서 우리와 다르다고 그들의 인식을 아예 잘못되었다거나 틀렸다고 단정 지을 수는 없다. 하지만 중국과 타이완이라는 관계에 빠져버린 나머지, 동아시아 전체를 조망하거나 식민지와 침략이라는 가해적 행위에 대한 비판적 시각이 일관되지 못함은 지적해야할 것이다.

Struggle between Resistance to Japan and Nostalgia for Japan
This article presents a study in which the colonial memory that was represented in Taiwan cinemas was analyzed. The movie , which is about Taiwan natives who rose in revolt against Japan, is a work that could be characterized as an anti-Japanese movie. On the other hand, , which describes the procedure of Taiwanese and Japanese participants winning the second place in Koshien as members of the same team, appears to be a film that advertises the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.” The Taiwanese memory of the colonial period has many similarities that Koreans could share; however, Taiwanese memory also has its peculiarities. These peculiarities, in other words, the differences with Korean memory, can be analyzed from many points of view. Taiwan was not an independent country before it was colonized. Moreover, the Taiwanese identity was formed during the colonial era. The resistance against the Nationalist Party was extended to the positive reaction to the Japanese colonial period. Conversely, a person who rejects the colonial era might be recognized as one who accepts the Nationalist Party’s concept of the history. Taiwan and Korea were both Japanese colonies, but their experiences during that era were not exactly the same. Therefore, Koreans cannot conclude that the Taiwanese understanding is completely wrong simply because it differs from their own. However, it must be pointed out that the Taiwanese lack a critical view of harmful actions such as colonization and invasion because of their country being absorbed in the relationship between China and Taiwan.
