Iwashimizu Hachimangū(石清水八幡宮) in “Masukagami(増鏡)”. The chronicle(縁起, engi) of the Iwashimizu Hachiman shrine shows an aspect as (1) god of national pacification (鎮護国家, chingo kokka), (2) god of the Emperor’s protection, (3) god of a castle guardian, but in “Iwashimizu Monogatari(石清水物語)”, the aspect is transformed into (1) god concerned with bravery, (2) accomplishment of love. Further, Iwashimizu Hachimangū in “Towazugatari” reveals an aspect of a divinity: (1) god of the annual prayer, (2) representative of god, (3) god of mercy, and (4) god of Gedatsu (being liberated from earthly desires and the woes of man) of mankind. Furthermore, the shrine is concerned with the aspect of a protector: (1) an object of the disease recovery prayer, (2) an object of the easy delivery prayer, (3) an object to take an oath, and (4) an object to make an [a monetary] offering. Overall, Iwashimizu Hachimangū represents the aspects of both the power and protection in “Towazugatari”, so we consider that the shrine undergoes various changes. To date, a closer relationship between “Masukagami” and “Towazugatari” has been pointed out in that some sentences of “Towazugatari” are cited in “Masukagami” in the form of several steps. Iwashimizu Hachimangū in “Masukagami” is concerned not only with the aspect of a divinity: (1) god who protects succession to the Imperial Throne, (2) country household gods, and (3) ‘life release(放生会)’ as the public religious service, but also with the aspect of a protector: (1) an object of a prayer that is easily delivered, and (2) an object of the royal visit. Overall, Iwashimizu Hachimangū represents an aspect of both the power and protection in “Masukagami”, thus we consider Masukagami to undergo various changes because overlaps occur only in an object of the easily delivered prayer between “Masukagami” and “Towazugatari”, and other aspects related to the power and protection in “Masukagami” are different from those in “Towazugatari”.
