Translator, Spy and the US in Literary works by Kim Seokpom : Exploring a Possibility to Connect Modern Korean Literatures

This paper presents an analysis of the transition of the linguistic environment of Korean intellectuals from bilingual to trilingual between the 1940s and 1950s, by cross-examining the main characters who are interpreters, translators, and/or spies in Kim Seokpom’s works related to the Jeju Island 4.3 massacre. The first appearance of a trilingual spy/interpreter was in his debut volume the Death of Crows (1957). Similar character profiles followed in his other works including his masterpiece The Volcano Island (1976-1997). This paper reveals the necessity of the writer to be familiar with the setting in perceiving the true nature of the 4.3 incident, which occurred at the time of the transition of the US into an ex-colonizer in Japan. In the latter part of this paper, Korean American and Zainichi Korean writers who actually worked for the U.S. military as interpreters or translators during the Korean War are analysed to prove the effectiveness of the comparison between the Korean diaspora literature produced in the US and Japan. Finally, instead of being bound by the nation state-centered “national literature” or being forcibly trapped in the South Korean-centered “Korean diaspora literature,” a vision for a new concept of “plural Korean literature” with wide branches into modern Korean history is presented.
