The Magnetic Field of Japanese Literature and Literature Language in Post-war Okinawa

Literature from postwar Okinawa (especially novels) not only visualized the Japanese acquiring the transcendental status of the standard language (common language) through the process of commonization and homogenization, but also contributed greatly to the spread of Japanese as a national language in that it promoted the conscious internalization of Japanese. The Okinawan dialect was regarded as an indispensable way to convey ideologies that could not be reproduced in standard language, thereby representing the locality of Okinawa. This process concentrated the focus of public attention on the Okinawan language, and in some cases, the use of the Okinawan dialect, which was of a strategic nature, increased dramatically, yet it was also a phenomenon on the premise of the linguistic identity of Japanese people. Because of this aspect, some researchers have paid attention to the distance between Japanese as the literary language of Okinawa and the local language the writer has acquired, and explained in depth how it affected the writer's language perception and literary form, and how it was involved in the representation of Okinawa. The distance between language and language subjects was a fundamental task of Okinawan literature so much so that the term "Japanese literature of Okinawa" was created in order to emphasize the divergence, discrepancies, and asymmetry between the literary language and writers. In this article, we examine the process of searching for the literary language used by postwar writers of Okinawa, and discuss how the debate and discourse it triggered affected the literary spirit of postwar Okinawa as well as how it was implemented. The process of conflict, fighting, and negotiation surrounding the language of literature can ultimately be expected to be an allegory that represents the relationship between the Japanese mainland and Okinawa.
