英学資料における外国語表記 ― 「エ」と「ヱ」の使用に注目して ―
본고에서는 근세와 근대 일본에서 제작된 영어 관련 서적에 나타난 エ와 ヱ에 대해 조사하였다. ヱ는 현재 쓰이지 않으나 근대까지만 해도 일상적으로 쓰이는 문자였다. 또한 エ와 ヱ는 원래 음운상 차이가 있는 글자였으나 근세에 들어서는 그 차이가 없어 진 상태이다. 처음 일본에 영어로 쓰인 서적이 들어왔을 때 일본인들은 서양의 글자를 어떻게 읽 어야 할지 잘 몰랐으므로 단어의 발음을 가타카나로 표기하였다. 다만 당시에는 외국어 를 가나로 어떻게 표기해야 하는지 규범이 정립되지 않은 시기였다. 이에 당시 영어 관련 서적에서 エ와 ヱ가 어떤 식으로 쓰였는지, 각각 얼마나 사용되 었는지 조사하였다. 구체적으로 1811년~1914년 사이에 출판된 영어 관련 자료에 실린 알파벳 표기와 영어 단어의 발음에 ヱ가 적힌 단어들을 취합하여 조사하였다. 조사 결과 다음과 같은 사실이 밝혀졌다. 1. 처음에는 ヱ가 많이 쓰였으나 1885년 이후부터는 エ가 더 많이 쓰이게 되었다. 2. ヱ는 w의 발음 외에도 a의 발음을 나타낼 때 많이 쓰였다. 3. 『洋学指針』英学部을 제외하면 エ와 ヱ를 구분하여 사용하는 모습은 보이지 않았다.

The Transcription of Foreign Languages in English Materials : Focusing on to the Use of ‘エ(e)’ and ‘ヱ(we)’
The present study investigated エ(e) and ヱ(we) that appeared in the materials for English studies produced during the early modern period and modern Japan. The ヱ is not used currently, but was a commonly used character previously. Originally, the letters エ and ヱ had phonological difference; however, the difference disappeared in the early modern period. When the materials written in English first came to Japan, the Japanese did not know how to read the Western letters. So, the pronunciations of the words were marked as katakana. However, at that time the norms on how to express foreign languages in Kana were not established. Accordingly, the present paper investigated how and to what extent the エ and ヱ were used in the materials for English studies between 1811 and 1914. The study revealed that ヱ was used heavily at first, but after 1885, エ began to be used more. The ヱ was used to indicate the pronunciation of ‘a’ in addition to the pronunciation of ‘w’, and there was no instances of using them separately except Yougaku Shishin : Eigakubu.
